General Motors (GM) has strategically adjusted its approach, diverging from an exclusive focus on electric vehicles (EVs) to prioritize the production of hybrid models for the U.S. market.

Shifting Strategy: During the recent quarterly earnings call, GM’s CEO Mary Barra communicated the company’s decision to make room for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in its product lineup. Barra emphasized GM’s enduring commitment to achieving emission-free light-duty vehicles by 2035. However, recognizing the current pace of electric vehicle sales, GM acknowledges the importance of deploying plug-in technology in specific segments.

Upcoming Hybrid Models: The forthcoming hybrid models, identified as versions of “select vehicles,” mark GM’s return to the hybrid market in North America. Previously discontinuing the Chevrolet Volt in 2019 and focusing solely on fully-electrified vehicles, GM is now poised to reintroduce PHEVs to the U.S. market.
