Sainsbury’s Unveils Smart EV Charging Network


Sainsbury’s has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative in the realm of electric vehicles, introducing Smart Charge, a dedicated EV charging service. This marks a significant step in the supermarket’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Smart Charge Deployment: With plans to deploy more than 750 Smart Charge bays across 100 locations by the end of 2024, Sainsbury’s aims to secure its position among the top five providers of ultra-rapid charging in the UK. This ambitious move reflects the supermarket’s dedication to facilitating widespread access to efficient and speedy EV charging.

Unique Ownership Model: Setting itself apart, Smart Charge is the first and only EV charging business fully owned and managed end-to-end by a UK supermarket. The technology and equipment driving this endeavor are provided by Kempower, ensuring a seamless and reliable charging experience.

Service Availability: As of today, around 200 ultra-rapid charging bays are operational at just over 20 Sainsbury’s locations. This availability offers drivers the convenience of ultra-rapid 150kW+ chargers, promising a quick turnaround and eliminating the need for extended waiting times associated with less powerful alternatives.

Efficient Charging Experience: Smart Charge bays enable users to fully charge their vehicles in as little as 30 minutes, providing ample power to travel up to 200 miles. Notably, many of these chargers can facilitate even faster charging if a vehicle’s battery can handle speeds of up to 300kW.

Future Expansion Plans: Sainsbury’s is not stopping here. The supermarket has outlined plans to consistently add new charging hubs to the Smart Charge network, reaffirming its commitment to fostering sustainable and efficient electric transportation.

This strategic move positions Sainsbury’s at the forefront of the evolving landscape of EV infrastructure, promising customers an unparalleled and environmentally conscious charging experience.
