SEATTLE, Sept. 12, 2023 – Boeing and SMBC Aviation Capital have announced a new order for 25 Boeing 737-8s. This order expands SMBC’s 737 MAX portfolio to a total of 81 jets, emphasizing the market-leading 737-8 variant.

As global travel demand rises, aircraft lessors like SMBC are increasing their single-aisle aircraft portfolios to provide airlines with more fuel-efficient options capable of serving diverse route networks.

Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital, expressed enthusiasm about the order, stating, “This transaction demonstrates our commitment to provide our customers with the latest technology, most fuel-efficient aircraft, as they seek to meet their own sustainability objectives and reduce operating costs.” He also highlighted strong long-term demand for the 737 MAX and the lessor’s readiness for future growth amid a global air travel recovery.

The Boeing 737-8 offers airlines flexibility across various networks while reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 20% on average. Each aircraft is expected to save up to 8 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually compared to the aircraft it replaces. In 2023, Boeing has secured more than 400 orders for the 737 MAX family.

Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, underlined the aircraft’s value, saying, “The 737-8’s incredible versatility and unrivaled fuel-efficiency makes it a key asset for the leasing community in its drive to help airlines achieve sustainability and efficiency goals.”

The Boeing 737-8 can accommodate between 162 to 210 passengers depending on configuration, has a range of 3,500 nautical miles, and is suitable for profitable short- and medium-haul routes.
