Xiaomi Unveils Maiden Electric Car, Aims for Top Automaker Status


Chinese tech company Xiaomi has officially unveiled its first electric vehicle (EV), the SU7. Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, expressed the company’s vision to rank among the world’s top five automakers over the next 15 to 20 years.

SU7 Features and Specifications: The SU7, short for Speed Ultra, boasts advanced “super electric motor” technology, promising acceleration speeds that rival Tesla and Porsche EVs. The EV, set to hit the market in a few months, aligns with Xiaomi’s goal of creating a dream car comparable to top-tier brands.

Market Position and Competition: Xiaomi, aiming to diversify beyond smartphones, has pledged a significant investment of $10 billion in the automotive sector. The company faces stiff competition in the crowded Chinese EV market, with BYD and Tesla being notable contenders.

Production Partnership: Xiaomi’s EVs will be produced by a unit of state-owned automaker BAIC Group, with an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles. This partnership aligns with Xiaomi’s strategy to navigate China’s dynamic EV market.

Stock Market Response: Despite the ambitious unveiling, Xiaomi’s share price saw minimal gains, reflecting the challenges of entering the highly competitive EV market in China.
